"In Berlin you have the freedom to be who you are"

The painter Alona Harpaz from Israel believes that art is a way of life and Berlin fulfills her needs for creativity and commitment.

From the beginning I wasn’t a classical painter, I prefer calling it "painted surfaces". My origin is art; I look at things and reconstruct them. I understand that my paintings are seen to be portraits but in my point of view, I create surfaces with a few lines and color them. In the long run, it has become my career.

I moved to Berlin 13 years ago with my husband, a German citizen who I first met in India. My daily life consists of taking care of my two children and my art. I have a studio and I paint there. In March, I will present my exhibition in Japan. Part of my daily life is the Circle1 gallery that I established with an Israeli artists group in Berlin. There, we present there changing exhibitions of Israeli artists and curators.

Art for me is a way of life, the ability to combine clarity and commitment with freedom. Berlin, to me, meets this definition. I connect to this place as one of accuracy and clarity with a lot of limits and respect, but you have freedom to be who you are and everyone is accepting of others."
