Playful in Berlin

Playground Israel Festival: Days of fun coming up at Berlin’s Theater an der Parkaue.

A place for debate, utopias and dreams; a stage for the Israeli Theatre for Children and Youth; a lab for a young audience – the Playground Israel Festival offers all that. And more besides: From 1 to 5 July 2015, Theater  an der Parkaue is hosting a rich cornucopia of events, including puppet plays and object theatre, plays for small children, dance, music and drama. Jointly hosted by Theater an der Parkaue and the Israeli Embassy, the festival reaches out to families, kids and youngsters.

The evening programme is dedicated to an adult audience; events include, amongst others, a concert by Israeli jazz musician Omer Klein and the Long Israeli Reading Night featuring writers Ayelet Gundar-Goshen, Marko Martin, Ron Segal and Michal Zamir. While a German-Israeli co-production brings together German and Israeli theatre artists and encourages them to work together.

The supporting programme includes, amongst other things, a unique vocation: the medical clown. In Israel there are 70 such clowns employed at 20 hospitals. The idea is to help sick children and mentally infirm adults to get better using a mix of medical therapy and buffoonery. In Israel, a special degree course has now been established for those wishing to follow this profession.
