Israeli Opera in Bonn

Two compositions from Israel to be performed at an unusual venue for opera: the “Bundeskunsthalle”.

“The Garden” is a chamber opera about paradise. It was written in 1987 by Josef Tal, one of Israel’s most important composers. Born in 1910 in Poland, Tal studied in Berlin, among others under Paul Hindemith, before fleeing Nazi Germany in 1934. The influential teacher and composer died in 2008 in Israel. “Conversation with a Stone” is the title of the second chamber opera that will be performed in the “Bundeskunsthalle”, the art and exhibition hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn. In her piece, composer Ella Milch-Sheriff, who was born in 1954, set to music a text in Hebrew and Polish by Polish Nobel Laureate Wisława Szymborska.

Both works will be staged by Theater Bonn and the “Bundeskunsthalle” in cooperation with “Verein an der Synagoge Bonn”. On the one hand, the occasion marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel, and on the other it commemorates the pogroms in November 1938.

Yakov Hadas-Handelsman, the Israeli ambassador to Germany, is the patron of the evening.
