Jewish Life in Germany

International representatives of Jewish organisations familiarise themselves with life in Germany today.

In mid-June, as part of the Federal Republic of Germany’s Visitors’ Programme, 16 representatives of Jewish institutes, museums and memorial sites together with religious representatives and journalists from 15 countries visited Germany at the invitation of the German Federal Foreign Office. In addition to the focus on commemoration, the key aim of the six-day trip was to let visitors experience the diversity of Jewish life in Germany today, as is to be encountered in Berlin and Frankfurt/Main. In both cities the guests met with representatives of the Jewish community and with non-Jews. Amongst other things, in the German capital the group visited the foundation “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future”, the editorial office of the “Jüdische Allgemeine” newspaper and participated in a round-table at the Federal Ministry of the Interior on the topic “Fighting Anti-Semitism, Promoting Democracy”. At the German Federal Foreign Office (photo) the group was welcomed by Felix Klein, Special Representative of the German Government for Relations with Jewish Organisations and Anti-Semitism. In Frankfurt the guests not only visited the Isaak Emil Lichtigfeld School, the first Jewish school in Germany after the Holocaust, but they also met Jews who have returned to Germany and are today successful entrepreneurs and artists.
