Art of the here and now

Tel Aviv Museum of Art presents “Turn On”, an exhibition featuring key works from the Julia Stoschek Collection, including pieces by Marina Abramović, Sturtevant and Ed Atkins.

“Turn on” – the title readily transports a multifaceted spectrum of associations to the exhibition: switching on, igniting, not to forget the physical “titillating”. The title has been borrowed from Adrian Paci’s eponymous artwork, on show in Tel Aviv from 31 March until 29 August alongside pieces by 16 other artists. The works are part of the Julia Stoschek Collection, a private collection of international contemporary art with a focus on video works, installations and photography inaugurated in 2007.

Contemplating the here and now is one of the key aspects behind the collection concept. Consequently, Turn On only presents works that are at most ten years old, leading to an astonishing variety of media-based art, with the works on show demonstrating not only performance-based and theatrical approaches, but also narrative forms. Moreover, there are a number of animated works, such as Ed Atkins’ poetic avatars.

Turn On is the largest exhibition of installation and video art in Israel to date. Another very unusual fact is that more than half of the participating artists are women.
