Challenging relationships

Premiere in Karlsruhe: The German-Israeli theatre project “Love Hurts” explores binational relationships.

In numerous interviews with German-Israeli couples, director Avishai Milstein compiled a collection of fascinating stories about binational relationships and adapted them for the stage. Israeli Milstein knows both sides: The winner of the Israel Theatre Prize studied in Germany.

The play, due to premiere in Germany on 1 October at Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, evolved in the course of rehearsals in Karlsruhe and Tel Aviv. German and Israeli actors will speak in three languages, each of which will be subtitled in the performances in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Karlsruhe, Ulm and other locations.

“Love Hurts” is a coproduction of Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Teatron Beit Lessin, Israel’s second-largest theatre. It is being supported by the Goethe-Institut, the Israeli Foreign Ministry and the Society of Friends of Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. The play forms part of the programme of the 23rd European Days of Culture festival on the topic of “Wanderings”.
