Discovering Israel

The North Rhine-Westphalia State Parliament is organizing an Israel Day so that schoolchildren can get to know Israel better.

Do only Jews live in Israel? What values shape Israeli society? How is it that a country of orange farmers has become a high-tech hub? Israel features in German media almost daily – and yet above all young people know very little about it. For this reason the State Parliament and State Government of North Rhine-Westphalia are hosting an Israel Day in cooperation with the Embassy of Israel. It will be held on 1 June 2015. It will kick off with seminars for schoolchildren on everyday topics such as “Sport in Israel” and “Facets of Israeli society”. The children will learn, for example, that Israelis like to do voluntary work and get involved in peace projects and they love football. Moreover, information will be provided on how they can spend a year in Israel themselves.

This will be followed by the celebratory event “50 Years of German-Israeli Diplomatic Relations”, organized by the Federal State’s Parliament and Government. Minister President Hannelore Kraft will be in attendance, as will Minister Avraham Nir-Feldklein from the Embassy of Israel to Germany. The ceremonial address will be given by Grisha Alroi-Arloser, CEO of the Israeli-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce Tel Aviv and President of the Israeli-German Society.
