Jewish Week in Leipzig

Many reasons to celebrate: In a year of numerous anniversaries, Leipzig presents a huge programme.

This Week is 20 years old: In 1995 the Jewish Week was first celebrated by the city of Leipzig, the Israelite Religious Community in Leipzig (Israelitische Religionsgemeinde zu Leipzig) and the Ephraim Carlebach Foundation (Ephraim-Carlebach-Stiftung). Since then, for an entire week every two years everything has revolved around Jewish culture and history. Apart from this 20th anniversary there are two other important jubilees in 2015 relating to the Jewish Week, namely 1,000 years of Leipzig and the 50th anniversary of German-Israeli diplomatic relations.

As such, there has been more talking, dancing, listening and looking in 2015 than ever before. From 28 June to 5 July over 120 events by more than 60 institutions and associations will bring the Jewish Week to life. They cover a wide range of topics from the illustrious times of Jewish life in Leipzig to the dark days of Nazi terror to the present day.

There will be exhibitions describing Jewish life in Leipzig in modern times and the present, as well as on Jewish mathematicians and physicists at Leipzig University in the early 20th century. Added to this are numerous lectures, guided tours, readings, films and discussions. Amongst the many concerts, dance and theatre performances there will also be those created as German-Israeli co-productions.
