Vocational education: Learning together

German-Israeli cooperation: The 2015 trainee exchange focuses on professions in the construction industry.

The 18 Israeli men and women who visited Berlin in October 2015 are in good company. They now belong to a group that boasts more than 2,300 people – trainers, trainees and young professionals who have taken part in a cooperation scheme between the Israeli Ministry of Economy and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research: the German-Israeli programme for cooperation in vocational education and training.

The ball got rolling as long ago as 1969, when the first German national scholarships (Deutschlandstipendien) were awarded to skilled Israeli workers. Now, since 2012, the programme has also been providing trainees and young professionals with the opportunity of spending some time in their partner country as part of a special training scheme. The 18-strong party of Israelis visited Germany in October. In November a group of Germans is setting out for Israel. In 2015 the emphasis is on professions in the construction industry, with a special focus on Bauhaus architecture.

The programme has a number of objectives. Firstly, it is aimed at encouraging the two countries to extend the scope of their vocational training measures. It provides both vocational trainers and trainees with the opportunity to learn from one another in the professional context. At the same time, learning about everyday life in their partner country allows them to understand one another better. This is the second objective of the exchange programme: to make a contribution to filling present-day German-Israeli relations with respect and interest in one another and to understanding the past.

In Germany, the programme is being realised by the National Agency Education for Europe at the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB).
