The anniversary – the world over

 

The 50th anniversary of Israeli-German diplomatic relations is not just being celebrated in Germany and Israel – there are countless dates around the globe.

 

All over the world, the German and Israeli embassies have taken the jubilee as an occasion to jointly host events.

As early as January 2015 there were joint events held to mark the International Holocaust Remembrance day – for example a German-Israeli piano concert in Tashkent and Bukhara (Uzbekistan), a memorial seminar in Kathmandu (Nepal), an exhibition in Miami (USA) and a film evening in Los Angeles (USA).

 

The closer things came to the actual anniversary – 12 May 1965 was the day when the treaty on diplomatic relations was signed – as the year progressed, the less the events focused on remembrance of the Shoah, the more they address the uniqueness, diversity and future of Israeli-German relations.

The German and Israeli Consul Generals in Toronto (Canada) even published a joint guest article on Israeli-German relations.

The German and Israeli Consulate Generals in the United States, for example in Boston, San Francisco and New York, joined up with the American Jewish Committee (AJC) to hold special festive events with lectures on 11, 12 and 19 May respectively.

In Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) the German and the Israeli embassies linked up with the Goethe Institute there to host three German-Israeli film evenings.

 

In Tiflis (Georgia) a joint jubilee concert was held, as was the case in Canberra (Australia).

Internationally active NGO Action Reconciliation – Service for Peace (Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste) is teaming up with countless German, Israeli and US partners from 23 June to 1 July to organise a series of events in America entitled “Special relations – shaped by people”: in Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, New York and Miami Beach.
